Plasma Skin Tightening

What is it?

Plasma skin tightening or plasma pen treatment is one of the only cosmetic treatments that uses plasma in order to eradicate excess skin. This treatment is most effective for scar reduction, wrinkle reduction, non-surgical eye lifting and tummy tightening among others.

Plasma skin tightening can be described as a soft surgery because the treatment has similar results to surgical procedures without being too invasive. In fact, plasma skin tightening treatments are so minimally invasive that they don’t require a scalpel, stitches or much downtime. It is a far more affordable option than surgery and has less risk.

How Does it Work?

The PlasmaPRO is an accurate treatment device that works by creating a small flash of voltage which goes from the metal tip of the device to the skin. This is a plasma charge that creates a micro-sized point in the skin. This electrical charge pinpoints the specific area and immediately creates shrinkage of that area as the skin tightens by the cells that are pulled together. The tissues that retract ultimately tighten the skin, in a similar way and with the same result as a surgical procedure. This is because the excess skin is physically reduced in the targeted area.

What Does it Treat?

Plasma skin tightening is an ideal treatment for a number of conditions. Some of these include:

  • Reducing excess skin on the upper and lower eyelids.
  • Removing or reducing skin blemishes such as sun spots and skin tags.
  • Reducing the visibility of scars such as acne, injury and post-surgery scars.
  • Diminishing the appearance and texture of stretch marks.
  • Reducing the fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth area.
  • Non-surgical face and neck lifts.
  • Tightening the loose skin around the tummy after a pregnancy.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

Plasma skin tightening is an effective treatment that can produce results almost immediately with a vast improvement within two to four weeks. Additional treatments can be done, typically after six to eight weeks but it is highly unlikely that more than two treatments will be needed. It is completely dependent on the severity of the condition, what type of condition it is, the level of correction, the skins laxity and how the person being treated responds.

How Long Do the Results Last?

With plasma skin tightening treatments, skin is removed. Therefore, the results are far more long-lasting than ordinary tightening treatments. The results would typically last as long as those of an invasive surgery but just like surgery, plasma tightening treatments can’t prevent the natural process of aging. The results can, however, be seen years after the procedure depending on which area has been treated.

Who Can Receive This Treatment?

Not everyone is suited to receiving plasma skin tightening treatments. It is best for visible conditions and for those who have lighter complexions. It is best to have a consultation with a professional to evaluate eligibility.

In order to undergo plasma skin tightening treatment, the individual must:

  • Be healthy at the time the appointment is scheduled for and without any pre-existing conditions. Even signs of cold or flu mean the appointment should be rescheduled.
  • Not be suffering from diabetes, lymphatic draining problems and healing disorders.
  • Not display inflamed skin in or directly surrounding the area that is to be treated prior to the procedure.
  • Preferably not be prone to contracting keloid scars.
  • Preferably not be prone to hyperpigmentation as this deems them not ideal as candidates for this treatment.
  • Be aware that not all complexions are suitable as darker complexions undergoing this treatment are at high risk of hyperpigmentation.
  • Not have a tan or sunburn at the time of the appointment, if so, the procedure should be rescheduled until such time as the tan or sunburn fades. Typically, eight weeks later.
  • Not display signs of Herpes Simplex Virus such as cold sores and fever blisters. If an outbreak is present, the appointment will have to be scheduled. Individuals should seek medical care to treat the virus before and after the procedure takes place.
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding as this makes them not ideal for the treatment.
  • Avoid this treatment if he or she has a pacemaker as it may disrupt their device’s rhythm.
  • Not have eyelash extensions if receiving an eye lift on either the upper or lower eyelid. Because these extensions are packed with bacteria, it is best to only have them replaced after a period of eight weeks.

Swelling is one of the most normal side effects of this treatment. This is because the treated area is recovering and has been administered with a deliberate and controlled burn. The swelling cannot be prevented as it is a part of the after-effects of the plasma skin tightening treatment but it is possible to minimize it by:

  • Taking an antihistamine about one hour before the procedure begins.
  • Using ice to decrease the tissue’s temperature which can slow down any swelling.
  • Receiving a lymphatic massage which prevents increased swelling from occurring around the eyes.

Decreasing swelling by minimizing the inflammatory response will help relieve any pain and discomfort.
